Driving Rules in North Cyprus

Easy roads, simple rules.

The main roads are good and most drives are short. Here is everything worth knowing before your first trip, so you can enjoy the island from behind the wheel.

On the road

Eight rules that keep every drive relaxed.

  • Keep left

Traffic drives on the left and cars are right-hand drive. Every car in our fleet is automatic, so you can focus on the road.

  • Roundabouts

Slow down as you arrive and give way to traffic from your right. Cars already on the roundabout go first.

  • Pedestrian crossings

People on a zebra crossing have right of way, so stop and let them cross.

  • Speed cameras

Fixed and mobile cameras work around the clock. Any fine is the driver's responsibility.

  • Seat belts

Everyone in the car wears one, in the front and in the back.

  • Children

Children under 150 cm tall travel in the back, in a seat that suits their size. Ours are free; tell us their age when you book.

  • Phones

Set up your route before you set off: drivers may not use a phone while driving.

  • Alcohol

Save the drinks for after the drive. The limit is 50 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood, and drink-driving also voids your insurance.

Rules from the road-safety leaflet of the TRNC Ministry of Public Works and Transport (read it here).

Papers and plates

What to bring, and how to spot your car.

  • Your licence

Visitors drive on a valid licence from their own country for up to 90 days. We accept national and international licences, for drivers aged 25 and over.

  • At a police check

You may be asked for your licence, your passport or ID card and the car's papers, so keep them with you whenever you drive.

  • Red number plates

Every rental car in North Cyprus has a red number plate starting with Z, so yours is easy to spot in a car park.

Read the signposts

Signposts mostly use the Turkish place names. These are the ones you will see most.

  • Gazimağusa Famagusta
  • Ercan Havalimanı Ercan Airport

If something happens

Keep these numbers handy. On a phone, tap one to call.

  1. Make it safe

Switch on your hazard lights, check everyone is all right, and call an ambulance if anyone is hurt.

  2. Call the police

Wait for their accident report before moving the cars, unless staying put is unsafe. Your insurance needs this report.

  3. Call us

We guide you through it and bring a replacement car if you need one.

  4. Take photos

Photograph the cars, the damage and the plates, and note the other driver's name, phone number and insurance.
